The Ontario Ministry of Education states:
“The primary purpose of assessment and evaluation is to improve student learning.”
At Makki Islamic Learning Centre, student skills are evaluated through the guidelines put forth by the Ontario Ministry of Education and the Peel District School Board, which are:
- Teacher observation. and anecdotal reports
- Teacher-developed activities and tests.
- Self and peer evaluation through portfolio assessment.
- Analysis of student assignments.
- Conferencing
- Check lists of skills and concept continuums
- Testing; formal and informal, oral and written
In Ontario school classrooms, there are three types of assessment:
- Assessment AS learning – students monitor their own learning, use feedback from teachers, from themselves, and from other students to decide the next steps to take and set learning targets.
- Assessment FOR learning – teachers partake in an ongoing, repetitive process of gathering and deciding from evidence about how their students are learning; in order to understand where students are in their learning, the best direction to go, and the best way to get there. All this information is deduced by teachers to provide the best feedback and provide appropriate instruction to students on an individual level.
- Assessment OF learning – the process of collecting and deciphering evidence with the intent to summarize learning at a given point in time, making judgments about student learning qualities (based on pre-established criteria), and assigning values to represent said qualities. All this information may be used to provide a report to parents about their child’s performance, to the students themselves, and to other teachers. Learning is summarized in levels and grades, which are sent to parents in the formal format of report cards at the end of semesters.
